Asmaa Hamzaoui

Biography

The leading female voice in contemporary Gnawa. Born into a Casablanca Gnawa family — her father is a maâlem, her mother a dancer — she was taught the guembri as a child and joined her father's band on qraqab and chorus before forming her own group, Bnat Timbouktou, with which she fronts a women-led Gnawa ensemble. Internationally acclaimed.
