Second son of Maâllem Boubker Guinea and brother of Mahmoud and Mokhtar; consecrated as maâlem at age 16. Maâlem of the Zaouïa of Sidna Bilal in Essaouira and undisputed master of its annual moussem. Nicknamed 'the Marley' for his dreadlocks and reggae inclination. Died on 21 March 2013 in Essaouira from kidney failure and acute pulmonary edema, after a week's hospitalisation; the libe.ma obituary noted he 'died in total destitution' despite his stature.

Born Abderrahman Kirouche in Essaouira; nicknamed 'Paco' and reportedly called 'the doctor of spirits' by Jimi Hendrix. Initiated as a child by Essaouira's master musicians, became maâlem in 1964. Member of Jil Jilala and then of the legendary Nass El Ghiwane, where his Gnawa rhythms gave the group its African dimension. Five gold records, ~80 songs across 26 albums. Died on Sunday 14 October 2012 in Essaouira after a long illness, aged 64; buried the same day in his native city.

Second of the two deans of the Casablanca Gnaoua (with M'allem Sam); inheritor of the Mersaoui style from the 1960s–70s onward. Born in Casablanca to a Black mother from the Souss; father from Ouléd Sbai (Sahara), a member of the Boussou kabyla originally from the Lake Chad region (brought to Mauritania by the Tuareg). Introduced to the Gnaoua brotherhood at age 5 by his maternal uncle. At age 7, on pilgrimage, the local Marabout came to him in a dream and gave him the guembri. First master: Ahmed Ould Hija. Subsequently introduced by the palace slave Khalthoum to the Marrakech masters Layachi Bagbou, Moulay Abdelaziz, Ben Omar Kaya and Majub Ould Fdila. Summoned to Casablanca by Sam in the early 1960s; their collaboration ran until 1968. Eldest dean of the Casablanca-school (Mersaoui / 'of the port') Gnawa, often credited with initiating the new Casablanca interpretation from the late 1940s onward. Born in Marrakech to a court poet from Houara (Ouled Teima); initiated at age 7 by Ba' Marjam, virgin priestess of the palace harem. Apprenticed under Majub Ould Rhennamia and Belkhir at the palace of Rabat, then — after a teenage dream in which Ba' Marjam appeared holding a wooden log shaped as a guembri — undertook a pilgrimage of the Gnawa brotherhoods, studying with M'allem Driss Khaouaj (Meknès), Ba' B'lali (Fez), Samba (Safi), Bou Salem (Essaouira) and Hajj Houira. Settled in Casablanca after marriage in the late 1950s; the Mersaoui style he shaped is characterised by ornamental zouag and the rapid playing pace of the city. Co-led the Lila ritual recorded on the Al Sur 'Maîtres du Guembri' / 'Suites du Rouge & du Vert' release (Vol. IV) with M'allem Hmidah.
